This first year event went off with precision, thanks to the ECU Army Cadets. The Wounded Warrior 10K became the first single loop 10K in Greenville since 1983, only made possible by their many sharp volunteers. All proceeds from the event go directly to the Wounded Warrior Program at Fort Bragg.
Kyle Bouren of Chesapeake took the lead from the gun (actually ECU’s mighty canon), but Ashley Bass of Nashville stayed in contact, and took the lead for good at mile 4, finishing in 37:30.
In the women’s division, Kay Evans cruised in to another win in 41:25, followed by Gina Battaglia of Greenville 20 seconds back.
Both Ashley and Kay can claim that they hold a 10K course record.
A total of 82 finished the 10K, and 17 finished the 1 Mile.
I am very happy with how the event went off, and we fortunate to have good weather during the races. No question, we lost some runners to football tailgating, some to other runs, some to other triathlons or marathons. My sincere appreciation to the local runners who constantly support the local races. We will do our best to avoid home football days in 2009.
Because Greenville is competing with other cities for races, ECRR must schedule 2009 events ahead of knowing ECU’s home football schedule, announced in March. We will make our best guess for fall dates in 2009 and post as “date tentative”. Once the football schedule is announced, we will confirm or change that date.
If you want to thank the Military again, participate in the Reindeer Dash for Cash on December 7.
My sincere thanks to ECU Army ROTC, Sponsors, and Runners.
